Dear All,

I plan to write the GMAT in Nov 08 IA. Today I gave my first GMAT Prep, the official software for prep from mba.com. I scored a 700 on it 48Q,38V.

However when I saw my mistakes I was not so happy. I wanted to confirm if my score is accurate. My quant score in raw terms was 25/37 and for verbal my raw score was 23/41.

Incidentally out of about 15 SCs on it I got about 11 or 12 wrong :( .....

Can others please confirm if GMAT Prep has given me an accurate representation of my score?????

Can other people please put in their GMAT prep scores and the raw scores for quant and verbal.

Thanks

Here's the reply I sent you via PM:

Since the GMAT is computer adaptive, you can't really look at number right vs. number wrong. Your score is not determined solely based on percentages, but on the difficulty of the questions you got right/wrong, where those problems were on the test, how many you got wrong in a row, etc. It's a lot more complicated than strict percentages. The GMAT Prep tests tend to be very accurate, so that's probably a good measure of your ability.

Also, here's a link to the percentiles:

I also received a PM asking me to respond.

Completely agree with everything Jim said. The other thing that's useful to understand from a practical standpoint: you're going to get questions wrong on this test - you can't get around that. The key to a very high score is to get the very hard questions wrong instead of the somewhat hard questions. :)

Our mindset on paper-based tests in school was to try to get everything right. You don't want to use this same mindset on a CAT. Instead, think of the CAT more as a tennis match: you can't win every point, right? Sometimes, your opponent's going to win the point. When that happens, think "good shot" and move on to the next point. Don't dwell on the previous point. Also, don't kill yourself running side to side, trying to salvage a point you're probably going to lose anyway. Lose the point right now and save your energy for the rest of the match - after all, you can still win the match even though you're going to lose some points. :)

Stacey, I love the tennis match analogy - it's so true. I may just have to steal that one. :)

Great advice...great analogy.

Can we at least try to win 6-0, 6-0 ?? ...I had a teammate in college that had a "golden set" (no points lost the whole set) ...although, I think his opponent was a little easier than the GMAT...no idea how this guy was playing college tennis.

lol - the GMAT is a special player - it's just as good as whoever it's playing against at any given moment. :)
