Dear Friends,

I was having problems in answering the following question.

Rejecting the apprenticeship model of training social workers in philanthropic agencies, twentieth-century reformer Edith Abbott was convinced of social work education belonging in the university so that students could be offered a broad range of courses dealing with social issues.

(A) of social work education belonging in the university so that
(B) that social work education should be in the university, and that
(C) about the importance of social work education belonging in the university while
(D) that social work education belonged in the university, where
(E) of the necessity of social work education being in the university and

Please help.

OA after some discussions.

My choice was option B

Regards
Deano.

IMO D.

Though convinced of/about something and convinced that something is true are all right idioms, if you look more closely at the meaning convinced that will be the one here.

A - so that is wrong
C - usage of while is wrong
E - being is wrong

Between B/D - B seems to split the idea into two things by using 'and that'. D seems more clear linking the two. Hope this helps :)

Tough question btw, maybe experts could be more elaborate on the explanation.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

A - IMO Usage of SO THAT as such is wrong in A bcoz it is not clear what this clause intending to modify. It appears SO THAT CLUASE is standing for the entire previous clause 'Abbott was convinced of social work education belonging in the university..', making the meaning unclear.

B/C/E - they all presents 2 different ideas (different from the intended meaning). Agree with sam2304.

D - usage of THAT makes the meaning clear WHAT ABBOTT WAS CONVINCED ABOUT. It also replaces SO THAT by WHERE clearing modifying UNIVERSITY.

IMO D
