I think option C.

Eliminate option A and B the modifier is not modifying the right subject (who is competing for the market control? Corporations ).

Eliminate option E the word 'spent' implies simple past tense which is not in sync with the sentence tense (Present continuous).

Between C and D, D contains the phrase 'a variety of media' which doesn't sound appropriate.

So C is the right choice.
