the public's widespread belief... (belief is singular)
Thus have is incorrect
Eliminate C and E.
B) is also incorrect.. (and they are...)
IMO D
in A, their refers to what??

cans,

agree that it is D, however-- the 'its' in the underlined portion is referring to the possessive form 'public's belief'... pronoun's cant refer to possessive?
how can a belief have curiosity?

Correct me if I'm wrong.. Thanks!

this sentence has 'subject phrase' which is the "public's interest" and as you know this is singular and need 'has' as a singular verb
IMO: D

its is referring to public's... its is a possessive pronoun and can thus refer to possessive noun (public's)
