by Dean Jones » Sat Dec 17, 2011 6:34 am
Dear Friends,

I was having problems in answering the following question.

In Scotland, the number of wild salmon have been reduced because of uncontrolled
deep-sea and coastal netting
, by pollution, and by various other threats to the fish's
habitat.

A. number of wild salmon have been reduced because of uncontrolled deep-sea and
coastal netting
B. number of wild salmon is reduced because deep-sea and coastal netting is not
controlled
C. numbers of wild salmon has been reduced because of uncontrolled deep-sea and
coastal netting
D. wild salmon's numbers are reduced by deep-sea and coastal netting that is not
controlled
E. wild salmon's numbers have been reduced by uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal
netting

Please help.

OA after some discussions.

My choice is option B

Regards
Deano.

IMO - E;
A - have been -should be has been
B - changes meaning
C - should be have been
D - are reduced -changes meaning , and the phrase "by pollution.." is attached to that clause.
E - looks good.

A. number of wild salmon have been reduced because of uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting
B. number of wild salmon is reduced because deep-sea and coastal netting is not controlled
C. numbers of wild salmon has been reduced because of uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting
D. wild salmon's numbers are reduced by deep-sea and coastal netting that is not controlled
E. wild salmon's numbers have been reduced by uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting
Tough one;
A - THE NUMBER ...HAVE (incorrect
B - THE NUMBER...IS ...DEEP SEA AND COASTAL NETTING IS (we require ARE). Note in original sentence, both DEEP SEA AND COASTAL NETTING are controlled and therefore by using IS B SAYS ONLY COASTAL NETTING AS CONTROLLED

C - THE NUMBERS...HAS (incorrect)
D - THE NUMBERS....ARE...DEEP SEA AND COASTAL NETTING IS (we require ARE). Same problem as B. Additionally it is also not clear what does the prep modifier BY POLLUTION modify here.

E - THE NUMBERS...HAVE

IMO E

IMO E.

Both users have explained everything :)

A - the number - SV agreement
B - coastal netting is not controlled, by pollution, by ... - modifying phrases are not proper.
C - the numbers - SV agreement
D - same as B - modifying phrases are not clear in conveying the meaning.
E - fine.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

Interestingly, I missed two points:
1. "deep-sea and coastal netting" has a compound subject. I felt like a single concept but I think "are" is more appropriate.
2. Also, parallelism is missing in "deep-sea and coastal netting, by pollution, and by various other threats to the fish's habitat."
