The Bryant's flower shop situated at the New Plaza complex stocks four types of flowers. There are 1/3 as many violets as carnations, and 1/2 as many tulips as violets. If there are equal no. of roses and tulips, what percent of the flowers in the shop are carnations?

Let the number of carnations = the LCM of the denominators in the prompt = 3*2 = 6.
Since there are 1/3 as many violets as carnations, the number of violets = (1/3)(6) = 2.
Since there are 1/2 as many tulips as violets, the number of tulips = (1/2)(2) = 1.
Since there are an equal number of roses and tulips, the number of roses = 1.
Result:
carnations/total = 6/(6+2+1+1) = 6/10 = 60%.

The correct answer is E.

And there's always good old-fashioned algebra. Call the number of carnations: x

Carnations = x
Violets = (1/3)x
Tulips = (1/2) * (1/3)x = (1/6)x
Roses = Tulips = (1/6)x
Total = x + (1/3)X + (1/6)x + (1/6)x = (10/6)x = (5/3)x

Carnations/Total = x/[(5/3)x] = 3/5 = 60%. The answer is E

A little time-saver: the moment you realize that carnations constitute more than half of the total (carnations = x and everything else = (1/3)x + (1/6)x + (1/6)x = (4/6)x, you know that the carnations constitute more than 50% of the total, so you're done, the answer has to be E

We can let the number of carnations be 60, so 20 are violets and 10 are tulips and 10 are roses. So the percent of the flowers that are carnations is 60 / (60 + 20 + 10 + 10) = 60/100 = 60%.
