Trying to decide whether to apply now or next fall...would like to go now if my chances of getting in are good. Want to apply to Columbia, HBS, and Wharton

About me:

Gmat: Dec 08: 730 Q:49 V:40

Graduated in May 2007 from a top 10 school with a BS in Economics

Very involved in undergrad, lots of good extracurriculars, but haven't done much since college except work excessively

Have been working in real estate ibanking for a year and a half

Can give more info if it helps!

Hi G,
Thanks for your post. Deciding when the best time to get your MBA is really a personal decision, based on where you are in your professional/personal/financial life. That said, most of the top 25 MBA round 2 deadlines are coming up in the next 2-3 weeks. Not sure where you are in the process, but if you are starting from scratch, will probably be difficult to get everything done in time (although it has been done!).

And at 23, you are still fairly young. I would consider waiting another year. But in the meantime, start doing your research. Talk to alumni, ask questions on these forums and learn more about the MBA process.

I am a HUGE fan of these MBA Admissions books. Its a quick (and cheap) way to learn more about the process. Since it often takes several months to prepare, its good to learn the process early on.

My fav books are "How to Get Into A Top MBA Program" by Moutauk and "Your MBA Game Plan" by Bouknight/Shurm

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks so much for your advice, I will definitely get those books! Based on what you've seen, what do you think my chances are of getting into these schools next year? What do you think I can do to strengthen my application? Thanks again, I really appreciate it :)

Hi G -

Thanks for your post. As you probably know, its hard to gauge your candidacy into these MBA programs based on profile/stats, as much of the decision is based on your essays, LORs, interview performance.

Overall, you have a strong foundation. As you learn more about the admissions process, think about how you are unique from the 100s of applicants with similar backgrounds. Also, think about your post-MBA career goals and how the MBA program will help you achieve them.

Good luck... and let us know if you have any more questions...
