Press CR

by aj5105 » Mon May 11, 2009 8:39 pm
Criticism that the press panders to public sentiment neglects to consider that the press is a profit-making institution. Like other private enterprises, it has to make money to survive. If press were not profit-making, who would support it? The only alternative is subsidy and, with it, outside control. It is easy to get subsidies for propaganda, but no one will subsidize honest journalism.

It can be properly inferred from the passage that if the press is

(A) not subsidized, it is in no danger of outside control

(B) not subsidized, it will not produce propaganda

(C) not to be subsidized, it cannot be a profit-making institution

(D) to produce honest journalism, it must be profit-making institution

(E) to make a profit, it must produce honest journalism

P.S
Hello All, for the CRs I have been posting, I have taken double or treble the time (around 4-5 mins for each) with 50-60% accuracy. My timing has never been so horrible. Wanted to know what the respondents feel about the questions. Please feel free to comment.

Thanks.

would go with D

A. if subsidization then outside control. cant say that if no subsidization, no outside control. we do not know if subsidization is the only cause for outside control

B. no info to support this

C. stimulus says if not profit making, then subsidization. cant say if no subsidization, then not profit making.

D. correct IMO. if honest journalism cant be subsidized, the press muts be profit making

E. gets it backwards. to produce honest journalism, it must be profit making

ps: i found it quite tough too. was tempted to guess between C and D and finally went for D. are these lsat questions?

aj5105, I also read other questions that you have posted. Where did you get these from? Seems to be a very good source.

Tough nut.

here's my take:

If subsidized, then not profit making.

If subsidized. then no honest journalism.

So, to produce honest journalism, no subsidy.
Subsidy is needed if it doesn't have money OR its not profit making.
If no subsidy, then its profit making.

Thus, Honest Journalism implies profit making.
Hence D

The passage states that press can survive either by making profit or by subsidies. As a condition of being subsidized, the press must produce propaganda. As a conditon of making a profit, the press must produce honest journalism - which is exactly what choice E states. It is a necessary condition of making profit that the press is producing honest journalism. Choice D has it reversed - it states that as a conditon of producing honest journalism, the press must be a profit making institution. Here, the condition is not necessary. You can still choose to produce honest journalism regardless of whether you'll profit from it or not. Thus, it seems that choice E is much preferable to D.

I think D is the right answer
