IMO E is the best choice.

parallel construction and correct usage of plurals.

Agni_mba is right. The correct answer is E, although this one is very tricky because of the whole 'potential to be/as' conundrum. In the end, either one can be used, but the deciding factor is the parallel phrasing in E and the fact that all the parts of the list are plural. That must be because each part of the list must be considered separately. Break it down like this:

Gas Hydrates are being studied:

as reservoirs....etc
as causes....etc
even as contributors....etc
