According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, like that of earlier generations.

(A) like that of earlier generations
(B) as that for earlier generations
(C) just as earlier generations did
(D) as have earlier generations
(E) as it was of earlier generations

OA is E but I opted for A

Any thoughts ?

The answer is E as mentioned in the first post but its hidden you have to scroll the mouse over sentence OA is....

Guys,

I know that the answer is E, my question is why not "A".

Like is used to compare so in this questions the new generation is compared with old generation.

Just my two cents, Hope it would be useful to someone who reads this post.

LIKE - should be used to compare nouns.
AS - Is used to compare clauses. It is also used in comparisons that
use the construction as...as

Can someone please tell are we not comparing goals of two generations here ? If yes, then why "like" is wrong here ?

Why it should be E - Answer - Classic comparison question, where multiple objects are compared

I have given the same shade to comparable phrases/ words.

It does not refer to goal, it refers to "owning and living in a freestanding house.......

Even if there is a doubt there, look for other errors.

Options A and B are incorrect because of an ambiguous "that". What is "that", who can clearly say???

No verb corresponding to "is".

C - wrong - use of did (verb) is incorrect - did cannot correspond to "is" for heaven's sake

D - same reason - "have" cannot correspond to "is"

Bravely choose E

If you can remove options A and B with an ambiguous pronoun. Then why not "E" which also has a ambiguous pronoun "it"

why to correspond to verb "is"? and why not to verbs owning and living? (as rightly used in option C with the use of "did")
