Analysis of issue essay topic: "All groups and organizations should function as teams in which everyone makes decisions and shares responsibilities and duties. Giving one person the authority and responsibility for a project or a task is not
effective way to get work done".
The issue of whether should only one person be held responsible to take all project-related decisions rather than the entire team being considered responsible is a controversial one. On one hand, we need a central
authority who can take decisions on the behalf of the entire team and represent the team. On the other hand, helding only one person responsible for a team effort either for good or for bad reasons is
not at all justifiable. In my opinion, i would support the latter part of the argument and would like to provide some reasons.
First of all, in today's environment it is very important to work as a team in order to achieve the desired results. Since a particular task is divided among a set of people, this leads to division of work and hence
quicker execution of work. Since a particular module is assigned to either one or two individuals, they are the whole and sole people responsible for it. This will help cultivate the virtue of being responsible
among the co-workers. As for example, if a mother is planning to bake a cake and if she assigns small bits of work to her children, telling each one of them to very careful with their work, since if
either one's work is spoiled, the entire cake would be a waste. This way the mother is teaching her children to be responsible for the work being assigned to each one of them. Thus, team work can lead to
faster results and responsible workers.
Secondly, when it comes to taking decisions, since the work is divided among different individuals, the decision would not be a single person's decision, rather a team's decision. This will take off the pressure from
one person. Since if one team member makes a mistake, it should not be the responsibility of the team lead to take ownership of the team member's mistake. There can be two worst consequences of doing so.
One, the person who has made the mistake might not learn from his/her mistakes and there are chances of the samee type of mistakes being repeated in future. Second, maybe the team member who has made the mistake
is quite eager to take the responsibility on his shoulders in order to learn a lesson from his mistakes, his team lead's effort to consider himself responsible for his team member's mistake might make the team member
unhappy since he wants to take up his work's responsibility.
Finally, according to my opinion, the best way to work is to work as a team where each and every individual is responsible and also has the right to make decisions. This will lead to a healthy work environment
since work is being distributed among people, decisions too are being made by the same people. Rather than, a team of members working and one person taking the credit for the work done by the team
or being held responsible for the mistakes of the team. This will act as a motivation for each employee to think on a management perspective since their decisions are also being counted.
As for example, at Google, this is how they work. Each and every person working at Google is allowed to give his or her opinion and make a decision.
Lastly, i would like to conclude saying that all organizations should work in a team environment, where each individual is assigned a task and is responsible for the outcome of that task. Also by doing this, a sense of
responsibility will be cultivated among the employees. At the same time, let the employees also be allowed to be part of major decisions. This way they will be motivated to think better, would put themselves in the
management's shoes and this will even help to create a better thinking crowd in the organization.
