Please let me know your thoughts for me applying to NYU Stern Part-time Langone Program for Fall 2011.

Age: 26
GMAT: 680, Q: 50, V: 31, AWA: 5 (yeah, I know my verbal is low. I have only taken the GMAT once)
Undergraduate: Carnegie Mellon University
Major: Electrical/Computer Engineering (ranked 4th in nation by US News)
Add. Major: Computer Science (ranked 4th in nation by US News for grad)
GPA: 2.88
Current Employment: Systems Engineer (technical person in sales) I work with the customer to determine the best products that my company can provide to fit the requirements given. With my job, I have received multiple awards in sales and have done very well.

I think my one concern is my GPA. Granted, the two programs I graduated from are some of the top in the country, it still falls outside the 80% range of the part-time program (2.9-3.8). Also, being an engineer, one of the big comments about engineers applying to MBA programs is lack of outside interests and lack of communication skills. I doubt the lack of communication skills would apply to me, since I am an engineer in sales, but still would like to know your thoughts. Also, I am very active in outdoor activities.

The purpose of me getting an MBA is to gain the knowledge to start my own business in the future.

Thanks for your help.

Dear Riggs,

I actually think you could be quite a competitive applicant for the Langone Program if you have a strong application package--meaning a great set of essays and strong interview combined with the rest of your current profile. Your 2.88 basically puts you at the bottom of the mid-80% range, but rigor of school and major is taken into consideration during your evaluation. Additionally, your GMAT score shows evidence of your academic aptitude. While your verbal scores are low, your professional experience in sales, as well as a very well-written set of essays and awesome interview, will demonstrate your communication skills and assuage any concerns that might be raised. Your rationale for business school is also key to the equation, so be sure to effectively convey why you want to get your MBA and why you feel the Langone Program is the best place for you. Finally, you need to visit campus and attend a class if you haven't already. It shows you are doing your research and serious about returning to school. It will also help you in writing your essay on why the Langone Program.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Thanks Lisa. I was planning on visiting the school sometime in the fall, or possibly in the summer, since the part-time program will still be going on during that time. The good thing is I probably have a year to work on my essays, since I am applying for Fall 2011 start.

If anyone else has any thoughts, please let me know.
