Nationality - Indian
BTech - BITS Pilani - 7.71/10 GPA, Major GPA 8.77/10
GMAT - Targeting 740, targeting 51 in Q
GRE - 1380 (800 Qa 580 va)
Work ex - 2 years at the time of matriculation

I am interested in applying for MBA or MFE/MFin courses.
Since I have relatively low work exp and average acads, I am writing a slightly detailed description of my profile

Work Ex: For the past 17 months, I have been working with a company which is the worlds largest manufacturer of Agriculture Equipments. During the first 5 months, we were made to go through an intensive training program. I was the topper amoongst the incoming batch of students(students from top Indian Technical Institutes). Following this I joined a team that was responsible for developing software product for Fleet Management Systems for large vehicle contractors and Lenders . Within 12 months I was promoted from Engineering Trainee to Technology Analyst.During internal evaluations, I have recieved commendations several times from my superiors for my work.

Extra Curriculars:
I feel I have a lot of extra curricular activites in terms of quantity, but in terms of quality I am not sure how much they would weigh in.
Since graduation:
I co-founded a not for profit organization that trains destitute women in making paper and cloth bags and sells them at various retail outlet, helping women gain financial independence. Within 3 months of operations we had 25 women working with us and we helped them generate an income more than Rs 1500 per month (more than 2 times the poverty line benchmark).

During Graduation:
1) Co founder - Department of Sponsorship and Marketing for my college: This department was responsible for raising funds for all the college festivals organized by students of my college. In an academic year we managed to get sponsorships worth more than Rs 3 Million.

2) Co founder of two technical clubs: These clubs helped in fostering their respective technical specializations in students. One of the clubs got full sponsorship from a Major Chip manufacturing company. Members of these clubs published several IEEE papers and many went forth to pursue masters from Ivy league tech schools

3) Chief Event Manager of a National Cyber gaming festival
4) Volunteer for Social Initiative by the Times of India group.
5) I have a few more leadership ones but I feel they would only add quantity

Research Papers:
I have published 2 research papers in International IEEE Conferences.
One of them is in the related to pattern recognitions (I am not sure but would this add any value to my MF/MFE Applcation?)

Long Term Goals:
I would like to be an Investment Banker or an Entrepreneur in the Finance domain. I am also appearing for CFA Level 1 examination this december in order to pursue my future aspirations.

I am interested in pursuing MBA and MiF/MFE programs from top 30 B schools in USA.
I was hoping someone could help me shortlist the schools I have a realistic chance of getting into, for both MBA and MF/MFE programs.
After my priliminary research I was thinking of applying to these schools:
Tepper - MFE
Anderson - MBA
Nanyang - MFE
Johnson - MBA
Haas - MFE
NYU Courant - MFE
Booth - MBA

It would be really nice of you if you could help me classify these schools based on my profile
Also, kindly suggest me other B schools with MFE/MFin and MBA I can apply for.

Really appreciate your help.
Thank you
Kushal Agarwal

Your short work experience will certainly work against you since you will be competing with people with 5 or more years experience. Your extra-curriculars are valuable, particularly those that show business abilities.

You will need very strong recommendations that focus on the level of responsibility in your work. The fact that much of your time was spent in a training program will not help. You will need to compensate for weak business experience by showing outside activities. Again, the competition will very likely provide both strong work and strong extra-curriculars.

Your GMAT will be important. Your GRE score suggests that the verbal section will be challenging for you. HAve you actually taken practice tests or are you just guessng that you can get a 700+ score?

ALl the schools on your list are highly competitive, although Nanyang may be slightly less so. Any top 20 school has many more attractive applicants than it can accept so that any application weakness is serious.

With strong scores, recommendations and essays you have a chance at a top twenty school. but your chances would be greatly improved with solid work experience behind you. You have hit the top schools for an MFE. The following website rates more of the top MFE programs.

Hi Tani Wolff,

Thank you for your help.
I think I can score above 700 in GMAT as I have been consistently getting above 700 on practice tests.
With my relatively low exp. and avg acads, do you think a gmat score of around 750 could give me a shot at the B schools I am targeting?
Also, I am planning on switching from a core software role to more of a product marketing role (marketing of Risk Management products, done out of shear desperation to align my work to my carrier goal) in another organization.
Do you think I should wait out an year and then apply for these programs? Would this enhance my chances of getting an admit for MFE and MBA programs?

Really appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Kushal Agarwal

It is impossible to say what schools would accept any individual. There are people who have applied to the top ten schools and only gotten into Harvard. Much depends on the other applicants and what profile the admissions committee is seeking to fill. Of your list, Nanyang has the lowest average GMAT score, but it is a small class sot hat makes it more competitive.

Except for Tepper, the schools on your list accept around 20% of their applicants. If you are determined to go next year, you should include a couple of schools that accept 30% or more of their applicants.
