Profile Evaluation

Brief:
-Completed IT engg from a Good university in India (2008 Graduate).
- Have 2 yrs of experience under my Belt.
- Scored a 650 In Gmat & a 6 in AWA
- Working as a Business Analyst & handling various US based clients.
- Cleint appreciation & Recommendation would not be a problem.

I would like specialize in Finance.
Please suggest some schools where i should apply with this profile for '11 intake.

As I am sure you recognize, you will be entering a very large and competitive pool of technically-trained applicants from India. To gain acceptance to a top school you will need to find a way to distinguish yourself form the others. Unfortunately your GMAT score will be a handicap, especially with those schools that have GMAT averages around 700.

There are, however many fine schools that accept a large number of applicants with scores in the mid-600s. You can see the average GMAT information on any reliable ranking service such as U.S. News or the London Financial Times. Any well-regarded school will have a strong finance department. (Nine of the top ten finance schools are top ten in overall rank.) There are several schools ranked between 20 and 50 by U.S. News that have average GMAT scores under 680. Those schools also have higher acceptance rates and do not see as many applicants from India as do the very top schools.

Locations vary considerably and can have a large influence on the MBA experience. I often find that schools in smaller college towns or in the midwest have higher acceptance rates simply because there are fewer career opportunities for trailing spouses and because many people prefer to live in coastal cities. Smaller cities, however, can be much easier to live in and much less expensive. That makes those schools very attractive alternatives. Schools such as Ohio State, Purdue, Vanderbilt and North Carolina offer excellent programs. There are also programs in larger cities that should be within reach, such as Boston University, Emory and Boston College.
