SO XX THAT YY = YY will explain XX (normally XX is an adjective)
XX ENOUGH TO YY == tall enough to touch the roof (XX explains YY OR justifies XX by YY)

Drop C/D/E - wrong usage

B - though using the correct so..that construction, it changes the meaning. A SQUIRREL WAS SAID THAT..(it means someone/something said something to A SQUIRREL)

IMO A

IMO A.

Agree with above user's explanation.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.
