Profile Evaluation Please

by synchrodestiny » Tue May 20, 2014 4:19 am
I am sorry, I just discovered there is a main forum too. so might seem a bit 'cross-posted' :)

With the following profile I applied to MIT Sloan(dinged), Tuck(waitlisted then dinged), Kellogg MMM(dinged after interview), Johnson (dinged without interview), Tepper (dinged without interview). My question is: what could have gone wrong with my profile at the outset? Which schools do u suggest given my LT ST goals and esp my age? Should I take GMAT instead of GRE? How much should I aim for? Which colleges in US would consider someone my age?

Indian, 34, 2 masters after Bachelors in Engineering (one in engineering, one in Industrial Design from IIT), WE 9yrs, currently Senior Innovation Manager in a Telecom company in India, GRE 326 (168Q 158V 4.5AWA)
long term goal: my own innovation/ strategy consulting company
short term: joining a strategy consulting firm with global footprint
intl exp- 6 months, out of which 4 months at Samsung Design HQ, Seoul

extra curricular:
-part of an award winning NGO into human powered technology
-have an art and design focused company
-was an international baseball player as a child
-won innovation and design competitions (national and international)
-won essays writing and quiz competitions at national level

Thanks so much madam/ sir.

Dear Synchrodestiny,

Ideologically speaking, we do not believe much in a ding analysis - it leads to more heartburns and less of productive next steps. I will try to give you a fresher assessment. In any case, without access to your application and essays, a ding analysis would be nothing better than throwing darts at an unknown target. SO here goes:
  1. Some of the schools in your list are pretty aggressive - though it is a surprise that you didnt get an interview invite from some of them. You definitely need to start your essays afresh I guess.
  2. Looking at the calculator here, your GRE would roughly be equivalent to about a 710 GMAT. This may have been a handicap for schools such as MIT or Tuck, but not necessarily the others
  3. The only weak part I could surmise from your post is the goals. Having worked in the sector, I know that Consulting firms tend to hire younger grads - that may have been a big factor playing against you. Your employability is a huge area playing in the minds of adcoms - more so with someone having 9 yrs of work-ex. If you plan to re-apply think of making this area more robust and tying this up better with your longer term aspirations. 'Starting' a strategy consulting firm is VERY different compared to an innovation firm. So perhaps a re-think needed on the long term goal.
Hope this sparks some richer introspection

Cheers,

Without reading your application it is difficult to say what could have gone wrong.

A top-down analysis is that you come from the most competitive applicant group and are an older applicant each reducing your overall chances. Although more and more schools are accepting the GRE taking the GMAT could help but I doubt that was the only issue. None of this explains the disparity in your results with more selective schools waitlisting you and interviewing you while less selective schools dinged you outright.

MBAPrepAdvantage offers a Ding Analysis if you wish bottom-up detailed analysis of your MBA admissions results. Our perspective is that "those who can not remember the past are condemned to repeat it"
