Q. A train travels from New York City to Chicago, a distance of approximately 840 miles, at an average rate of 60 miles per hour and arrives in Chicago at 6:00 in the evening, Chicago time. At what time in the morning, New York City time, did the train depart for Chicago? (Note: Chicago time is one hour earlier than New York City time.)

(B) 5:00
(C) 6:00
(D) 7:00
(E) 8:00

First figure out how many hours the train traveled. 840 miles at 60 miles an hour is 14 hours. That means the train left New York at 4:00 AM Chicago time, which would be 5:00 AM New York time.

Isnt one hour earlier supposed to mean that Chicago is ahead than New York in time which would consequently mean that when it is 4.00am in Chicago it is still 3.00am in New York.

NO Chicago is earlier. IF it is 5:00 in New York it is 4:00 in Chicago, 3:00 in Denver and 3:00 in LA

Time taken by the train is 840 / 60 = 14Hrs

Therefore the train must have started at 4:00AM Chicago time, Since Chicago is 1 hr earlier than NY it will be 5:00AM in NY. Hence answer is [spoiler]5:00[/spoiler]

840/60 = 14 hrs

arrival was 6:00 pm, so departure was 4 am Chicago time

NY time = 4+1 = 5 am

Time for the trip = 840/60 = 14 hours.

We can plug in the answers, which represent the departure time.

Answer choice C: 6am.

6am + 14 hours = 8pm.
Since Chicago is one hour earlier, arrival time is 7pm.
Since the arrival time must be 6pm -- 1 hour earlier -- the departure time must be 6am - 1 = 5am.

The correct answer is B.

Since time = distance/rate, it takes the train 840/60 = 14 hours to get to Chicago from New York.

Since Chicago time is one hour earlier than New York time, when the train arrive in Chicago at 6 pm, New York time is 7 pm. Therefore, the train must have departed from New York at

7 pm - 14 hours = 7 pm - 7 hours - 7 hours = 12 pm - 7 hours = 5 am

Answer: B
