lower GMAT score on second attempt

Hello,

I scored 690 (Q47, V38) in Sep 2011, but I was not satisfied with the score because I was not able to complete the quant portion. I took the test again in Dec but ended up scoring 600. That day was very hard to me because first I slept couple of hours in previous night and second on test day I stayed in office till 12.00 PM to give the presentation to customer and then went to test scheduled at 12.45 PM.

Now I am not sure what to do. Is my condition really bad? Can I still apply to schools with 690 score? Whether the schools decline because of such perofrmance?

My profile:

I am a Hardware Engineer working in IT industry since 8 years. I worked in different circumstances and domains. My GPA is 2.6.

First of all, of course you can apply with 690, it's not that low. Look at the class profiles of the MBA programs, you are within the range. And you don't have to aim for the top-10.
Second, you can try retaking the test in order to improve to 700 or 710 so it'll look better.

If you think you can get higher, I would suggest retaking. As an Indian Tech dude especially, that higher score can make a HUGE difference for you. Plus you have the time, so study, and if you can boost your score by 30 points or more I think you will find it can make a huge difference.

Dear Jon,

Thanks for your advise. Do you think schools still accept my previous 690 score (even though I have latest score of 600)? If I start to prepare from now, I need to study integrated reasoning from scratch also. It is getting bored to study again. If you think I can make it to some good school with the current score, I can develop my profile some more strong in few areas. I have 8 years experiance and by the time I admit the school I will have 9.5 years experiance. Also I have diversified experiance both professionally (hardware design, software programming and testing) and personally (farming).

I don't know any such case as mine. Did you hear anyone who came across similar situation as I have? I appriciate your further advise and patience.

Ah sir, I know what you mean. The GMAT IS Boring! And I'm glad I never have to take that again. Of course if you apply the 690 counts and not the 600. and it's not anything you even have to explain. And yes a 690 is a very good grade. You can make it to a top 20 or top 30 school with your grade, but a Top 10 may be a bit out of range. So I would go for these excellent 2nd Tier schools if I were you, and as you wrote, work on developing the other aspects of your profile in preparation for your coming applications.

Just as importantly though will be to build yourself a solid strategy on choosing your schools to fit your profile.

Also keep in mind (I think many people forget this) that for Top 10 schools you'll be competing against the TOP people in the world. Position yourself the best that you can. To me it sounds like a change of heart and some re-calibration needs to be had. Throw all caution to the wind. If a top b-school is truly where you want to be then make sure you do everything in your power to try to make it happen.
My goal is to make MBA applicants take onus over their process.
