The ordinance is intended to force householders to separate such hazardous waste like
pesticides, batteries, fertilizers, and oil-based paints from the general stream of

I felt the answer was A because when we speak of nouns to use like[/spoiler]

You cannot use "like" while stating examples.

The correct idom usage is such X as Y and Z.
Hence, such is the perfect fit in this answer.

You use like to compare nouns and as to compare actions.

But here, you are not comparing, but you are giving examples. Hence you need to use Such X as Y or X such as Y (where Y is an example of X)

The idiom such X like Y is incorrect.

We use LIKE to do comparison and SUCH AS to give examples.
Here in the original sentence we are giving examples of hazardous waste, so such as is what we require. Since option C does not follow parallelism, Option E is the best choice.
