Profile Evaluation

by Rohan Mody » Wed Sep 07, 2011 2:24 am
Hello

I'm a prospective Fall '12 applicant to MBA - Finance programs in USA.
I've taken the Revised GRE and the scores would be out in November 2011 (P.S. - GRE scores are accepted by most B-schools now)

I've done my Bachelors in Business Management with a majors in International Finance from University of Mumbai.

JP Morgan Chase - Mumbai - 1 year of work exp in IB.
Nomura International PLC - London - 1 of the only 2 Indians selected amongst 1000's for a 6 months internship.
Morgan Stanley - Mumbai - 4 months in IB.

Had to leave Morgan Stanley to handle family business as my father fell terribly ill, and I being his only son had to take over and handle the business, and plan to do so until I fly for my MBA next fall. Handling and growing the business quite well, in spite of it being offtrack(Interior Designing)than my previous work experience in IB & education. Can this be highlighted well in my essays and work as a +ve point for me?

Will have total of 3 years of work exp by Fall 2012.

Very active with a few NGOs & other community services. excellent extra curriculars and co curriculars too.

Can you please suggest me B-schools in USA that match my profile.

Thanks for your help in advance and also for taking the time to read this. (I just realized that I might have been verbose).

Hi Rohan,

To suggest schools we would require more information including your gre score. So once you know the score or provide us the predicted scores we could suggest the schools for you. You could definitely add how you managed to picked up a new business venture and did well in it. Generally at tp schools students applying have 4-5 years of work experience. Keep in mind that the quality of your work, your academics and beyond academics will play an important role in determining your candidature.
Start thinking what makes you unique and what's that 'hook' that will be key to your application.

Yes! You have demonstrated success in two completely different areas.

What are your present goals? Do you wish to return to IB, grow the family business, or pursue other goals? This information along with your GRE score will help us guide you.

I wish to get into IB/PE, corporate finance post my MBA. I've taken the revised GRE and if compared to the GMAT, it should be something like a 650ish on the GMAT terms.

you must do either of the two at the present moment

1. wait to gain more experience, if you want bigger ambit of colleges within your reach
2. choose colleges wisely, prepare a strong application

in either case you can go for a retest.

First you need to get the information of what colleges can admit you in best case. Make a list in three sections. Colleges you want to join, moderate and safe bets.
After that prepare strong stories. Your profile is good.

Hi Rohan

You need to do a thorough self-analysis for the kind of colleges you want. Your level of understanding is very important because of the amount/places of information in International BSchool applications is humongous. At any stage of the application starting from choosing the right colleges to interview stage, you will see a direct need of your personal insight on the things you want. Preparation from within is something which can make you reach college far above your reach.

I will help for sure, but before that I would like to have little more information. Send me your email as pm and I will send you a few questions.

Companies that recruit for IB/PE tend to do so at the more selective MBA schools. Corporate finance jobs, on the other hand, are more prevalent at less selective schools.

But you already have IB work experience and have graduated from a Tier 1 Indian university (University of Mumbai), so you need to do your best to get a GMAT score (or GRE equivalent) above 700 to place you competitively for those more selective schools. With a 650 equivalent you are looking at MBA programs outside the Top 15 or so (and hence IB/PE) and are also restricted to schools that take the GRE. So my first advice is to take the GMAT and obtain as high a score as possible. My second advice is, if you ignore retaking the GMAT, determine which companies you wish to target post-MBA, download the employment reports from those schools outside of the Top 15 at which these companies recruit, and use this as a short list to further research MBA programs.

Best of luck,
