Rutgers MBA vs NYU Masters in Integrated Marketing?

i know some people on this forum may be a bit biased towards an mba but please give me your input on the following situation.

i got into both the rutgers mba program and the masters in integrated marketing program at nyu.

my experience to date is 12 years of running a mid size marketing business which has hit some hard times so i'm looking to get a masters degree and go to work for a large company in the marketing department while keeping my business on the side.

i would love to live and work in nyc so i figure nyu as a school is the better choice (i did my undergrad at rutgers by the way) but i also know an mba does have a bit better reputation.

another thing to consider is that i am pretty bad at math (i got top 10th percentile on my gmat in verbal and 33rd in quant) so no question i will have a much harder time with an mba curriculum, i'm sure i'll get through it but i would definitely excel at the nyu program while getting by at rutgers.

thoughts?

fstep,

If marketing is what you want to do, you like NYC, and you have some evidence (placement data) that NYU's integrated marketing program will benefit your career, then I would not join Rutger's MBA program. NYU does have a stronger brand as a school, no question, and an MBA from a lower-ranked school is not nearly as valuable as an MBA from a better school. Also, a two-year MBA would set you back financially more than a one-year master's.

Since you have found your professional niche already and have started a business, you don't need an MBA as much as someone trying to make a career change or learn about entrepreneurship.

the integrated marketing program is also 2 years. well i need the degree/school combination that will be more valued by employers since i'm trying to go from running my own business to working for a big company, which's not an easy transition to sell.

here's my other problem. i have the employment statistics from rutgers mba (79k avg starting salary, 85% job placement within 90 days, etc). the nyu program won't provide anything like that. i know rutgers mba is ranked 51 which's not that wonderful but it is the 3rd best program in the tristate, which's where i'm staying. do you have any idea what the integrated program from nyu is actually worth or how well their grads have done?

also as far as mba goes, doesn't ranking matter way more for finance people since most firms only hire from a select few schools unlike with marketing?

I understand what you're after. I don't have any info on NYU's integrated marketing program. It's not a good sign if they don't have any placement info to give you. Have they given you the names of any alumni?

I agree that a Rutgers MBA would have much more value in the Tristate area than outside it.

no but they're letting me talk to some current student, hopefully i can get more info from that but don't know how valuable it will be. i do have my undergrad degree from rutgers so i feel it wouldn't hurt to do my masters elsewhere. but yea it's a tough call to make without any stats to compare.

how much do you think your graduate gpa matters when it comes to applying for jobs? i'm asking because i feel i would do much better at nyu, simply because their curriculum has virtually no quantitative courses which isn't my strength.

I don't think grad school GPA matters very much outside of consulting and finance.
