Please Evaluate my Profile

by kum123 » Mon Aug 08, 2011 8:32 am
Hi,

Profile:
Undergrad GPA - 85% in Engineering from India. (must be 3.6 GPA)Topped the department in university.
Gmat - 1) 620 (q-50,v -24)
2) 680 (q-47,v-37)
3) 710 (q-49,v-37)
Work Exp: 1) As a marketing head in a chemical agency for 6 months after undergraduation.
2)For past 3 years working in a well-known IT MNC. Currently I am the team lead of 7 members managing a project worth $50 million. I have been promoted once in my tenure and have strong recommendations. I have won few awards at work and have completed few certifications provided by my company. The certifications are related to finance.

Extra curric - Good(Running an ngo along with friends for the past 3 years).

Post mba goals : Consulting in finance/Strategy

I had applied to Ross last year in round 2 after my second gmat attempt of 680. But I was dinged without an interview. Since the bar for the GMAT in my work category(Indian IT) tends to be higher, I retook the Gmat few days back and have got 710. But I am not satisfied as i was expecting ATLEAST 730. I am also confused whether I should retake the Gmat 4tth time!!!Few people in blogs are advising me to retake it fourth time as they are saying that the competition is tough among Indian IT students. If I give a shot again at Gmat I am sure, I will end up getting 730-750.

So please let me know whether 710 is sufficient to get into top 15 b schools in US considering my IT background. Also whether the adcom people would consider taking gmat 4th time as a negative aspect.

Thanks.

Well you have two options given your background and score:
1. Go for it this year as a slightly more risky endeavor
2. Wait it out for a more "Secure application" next year or next round.

There's nothing wrong with taking a GMAT a fourth time, on the contrary, especially if your score goes up it looks like perseverance. But you have a 710. It's a great score (okay maybe low for Indian or Chinese candidates) but nonetheless at this point, it's your stories, your recommendations, your career goals, your work experience that would be more relevant than 20 points on the GMAT.

Thanks for the quick reply. As you said I was targeting the second round as it would be more secure. Since I have 4 more months for the round 2 deadline, I was planning to give gmat again. I was worried that adcom would raise a red flag for the 4th time gmat.

Yes, as you know the IT applicant pool is competitive.

However, I would really recommend you to focus on your application & not your GMAT at this time. A 730 is not that different from a 710. Also, I do not agree with your plan on targeting the 2nd round. You already have an understanding of the process, GMAT is out of the way so why not target some schools in round 1? While a great application might have (almost) equal chance in both the rounds, a competitive pool will only get tougher (and this is from a personal experience of applying both in 2nd round & to Ross)

Thanks,...I know the competetion gets tougher in second round, but then adcom will be more ready to take risk with a comparatively low gmat score. But still I am confused!!!!I do want to apply in round 1, but this gmat score and having an IT background is confusing me.

You are assuming that the adcom will not find plenty of IT pool applicants (who have excellent credentials) in the first round itself. Some of these they would accept, some of these would be waitlisted - regardless of what happens, you would be compared to a larger set for a smaller number of seats. Again this is my personal perspective on the process, not what you would read on the school website. Would a 750 GMAT be better than 710? Yes, ofcourse. But, to me, the relative benefit of taking the test again does not match up with the inherent risk of applying late .

Don't worry too much about the IT background. Instead, focus on researching schools & showing the adcom that you really know the program/school that you are applying to.

Good Luck!

You should definitely apply this year. Waiting another year means you are older which would marginally reduce your admissions chances given your age is already above the mean ages of full-time MBA programs.

I would agree with other posters and apply in round 1 with the 710 score. Waiting another round for an uncertain score does not sound prudent. In a perfect world you would apply round 1 and retake the GMAT again since you are not penalized for another attempt. Schools merely count the highest score.

Whichever direction you choose best of luck and keep us abreast,

Hi Kum123,

It is not always about applying this year because you'll be older next year. However, you should have sufficient data points between the time you got dinged and during the time you are applying to have the "wow-factor" when applying to the school.

Have you reached out to any consultant to do your Ding Analysis? I highly recommend that you get a ding analysis done to understand if you are ready to apply this year and/or have a POA i.e. Plan of action to address those during the process. I'd be happy to have a call with you. Let me know if you wish to have chat so I can dedicate proper time to you. As a re-applicant you will need to give special attention during your application process.

I also recommend that you hire a consultant so you are in the same boat again. Good Luck!

Hmmm now you are getting into the nitty gritty of things. You know, whether you should apply now or not really depends on your goals, and what schools you are aiming for, and what you will be happy with getting, and how old you are etc. etc. "being older" by one year doesn't really matter if you are 25. Although let's not forget that this is your LIFE we are talking about. It's not all just statistics and so on to give you the best chances, but what makes most sense for YOU as a person with dreams, desires, goals, limitations etc. Also, I totally agree with our friend Sophia that you might want to have someone look at your last year application and see what they think of it.
