Corporations and other businesses should try and eliminate the many ranks and salary grades that classify people according to their experience and expertise. A flat organizational structure is more likely to encourage collegiality and cooperation among employees.
Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the issue.
Response:
The author asserts that organizations should eliminate the ranks and salary grades that classify employees according to their experienced and expertise. A flat organizational structure should be adopted because it is likely to encourage collegiality and cooperation among employees. I donot agree with the author as a non-hierarchical structure leads not many problems and is not fruitful in the long-run. The below mentioned reasons will substantiate my opinion.
Firstly, lack of a boss affects the work execution because nobody will exist for delegating the work, creating schedules for work completion and taking the responsibility for the final product. Conflicts among employees, which are inevitable, cannot be solved as employees will not have a person to resort to.
Secondly, presence of a higher official provokes a fear among employees to do work dedicatedly. But if a superior is absent, as in a flat organization, employees will grow lazy and the quality of work will be greatly affected.
Thirdly, A flat organization requires an equal payment to all employees. If this is the case, employees with experience and skill will have no advantage over the unskilled and inexperienced. This is not justifiable.
Fourthly, the lack of incentives for early completion of job or for producing high quality work leads to an uncompetitive work environment. People will not have encouragement to perform better. Thus the company will neither be able to sustain their employees nor will produce good quality work.
In light of the above mentioned reasons, I find a hierarchical company to better as it fosters a competitive spirit among employees and produces good quality work
