Please Evaluate My Profile

Hi,

I'm a 27 year old male with 6 years of work experience. I graduated from a top 3 undergrad business program with a 3.3 gpa and scored a 680 (41Q/41V).

My work experience is split between an equity trader at a notable and hedge fund and the president of a family business (healthcare distribution company with 20 employees). I made the transition because I was tired of extracting value and wanted to create a business from the ground up. Sales are up each year since I started, whereas they were declining just before I joined. I have a decent story for why I want an MBA, but I won't get into that now for the sake of brevity.

Extracurriculars: underprivileged student tutor & treasurer for a non-profit

Any advise thoughts - my target school is Columbia or U Chicago, but I'm below the medians/means by a decent clip. Could my work experience make up for it? Should I retake the GMAT, or will it make much of a difference? Who knows... :)

Thanks so much for your time.

Dear jo777,

I think you have a chance at your current numbers depending on how strong your essays, recommendations and interviews are. If you have only taken the GMAT once and believe you can do better, then it is probably worth retaking it to see if you can increase your score at least 20 points. If you don't feel that is a strong possibility, then your efforts are better directed towards the rest of the application. I would also suggest applying to at least one safety school as a backup plan.

Good luck,
Lisa
