As a standard issue Indian IT applicant, you need at least a 700 GMAT at a minimum for the top 16 schools because there's way more applicants like yourself competing for limited spots, and yet there's enough of them that will have GMATs that are in the 700 range.

Regardless of your GMAT score though, what I suggest is to look at 2-3 top 16 school as stretches, but focus your efforts on top 30 schools (choose 3-4) as your sweet spots: USC, Texas, Tepper, Georgetown, UNC, Emory, Purdue, Indiana, Maryland, and so forth.

Hi there,

On the surface if we only look at the fact that you're Indian and in IT, I'd say you're in a tough spot.

BUT - you're with Deloitte (with whom Duke has a very strong relationship), you're a female (Duke has a pretty good % of females), and you seem to be doing well compared to your peers (which, in consulting, is key).

So while I agree with the gist of what Mr. Alex has proposed, I'm a little more bullish on your chances. If your long term goals are leadership within a consulting firm, then probably target Duke, Ross, and UCLA. As more realistic programs I'd suggest picking 3 or so from UT Austin, Emory, Indiana, UNC, and Georgetown.

Effectively, I've chosen schools that have strong consulting ties and that are partial to both women and Deloitte. UT Austin and UNC are good bets. Emory has a really small class size so that'll be hard. Indiana or Georgetown might be a good 3rd.

However, these are all challenging programs to get into so let me caveat my post by saying while I have recommended you pursue slightly higher ranked programs, you're going to have to deliver when it comes to your applications. You're going to have to make your experiences shine. You have the material there but the trick will be in execution.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Priya,

Your work ex looks good and flows coherently into a post MBA consulting story but GMAT score is a bit average. Deloitte brand should help.

Applying certainly in Early action to Duke will help but if you can retake GMAT by aug end and improve your score by 30 points, it will make your chances much better.

Apart from Duke you can consider ISB, Darden & Mccombs. If you are open to Canada consider Ivey and Rotman. In Europe you can look at Cambridge Judge and Said. All these have decent consulting placements.

Feel free to contact us for any queries.
