Request profile evaluation

by arpit_123 » Wed Aug 17, 2011 7:33 am
Hi,

I am looking at applying to B Schools this year for the 2012 intake. I would really appreciate if you could evaluate my profile, which is as below:

Country: India
Degree: Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech)
Branch: Electrical Engineering
GPA: 69% (2.9 on a scale of 4.0)
University: NIT Kurukshetra

Work Experience: 7 years in IT industry
Highlights:
- 2 years of onsite experience in USA
- More than a year of Managerial level experience - Managing a team of around 35 people for the last year

Extra-curricular:
- President of Technical Society in my Graduate school
- Convener of National level technical paper presentation contest in Graduation school
- Prizes in quizzes at National level
- Qualified zonal level Physics Olympiad

GMAT Score: 580 (QA: 48, VA: 22)

I would like your feedback on two issues:

- Should I give a second attempt at GMAT (My mock-GMAT scores ranged 670 - 720)
- I was interested in changing industry post MBA and move to Management consulting. Given the above profile and my target post-MBA, can you help me with which schools should I apply to this year?

Thank you in advance!

As you probably know, the IT applicant pool is very competitive.

Should you retake GMAT? Absolutely, and especially given your mock scores.

Schools: Management Consulting is a very general goal. You would need to make it more specific & also consistent with your work exp. That apart, almost any school with a good brand name can give you a foot in the door. First thing though is to sort out your GMAT; this score will make it extremely difficult at any good school.

Good Luck!

Yes, you should definitely retake the GMAT to be competitive with other Indian male IT candidates. A high GMAT score is desirable for a 2nd less apparent reason: Management consulting companies often use GMAT scores to screen applicants for interviews.

Good luck,

Hi Arpit

Since you are aiming for top schools then a score above 700 is desirable. However GMAT alone won't determine your chances of admission; beyond the academics will also help you in determining your candidature and your work experience plays a vital role as well. In general most of the Indian applicants are from engineering background with a good 4-5 years of work experience. So you would need to differentiate yourself from others . Start thinking what makes you unique and what's that 'hook' that will be key to your application.

Make sure you follow the 'show rather than tell' principle so that the admissions committee could really understand your strengths and differentiating factors Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So you need to ensure that in 4 years of work experience you have demonstrated the skills business schools are looking for. This could still put in a strong set of essays for you.

So yes we would advise you to retake your gmat in order to ensure eligibility to top schools.
