Hi,

I am looking to apply in 2012 for a few select business schools. Please do let me know what my chances are.

My profile is as follows :

25 year old Indian Male with 2.5 years experience in Automotive sector industry as business development engineer. Currently in charge of BD for European and East Asian Markets.

Good records at work. Recommendation from General manager.

GMAT : 680 - Second attempt. Quant was better. Verbal was weak. First attempt scored 620.

Undergrad : GPA 3.0 - BE in Electronics and Instrumentation Technology. Note : There is a gap of 2 years in education. I was working full time to support my education and hence dropped college for the time. My percentages though have increased consistently with 80% in my final semester.

Extra Curricular : Founder President of a Rotaract Club in my community. Lots of projects and fund raisers executed. Been active for the past 3 years.

- Part of college fest organizing committee in charge of sponsorship.

Best Regards

Mav

From which undergraduate institution did you graduate? The tier of the school is more heavily weighted for Indian applicants.

Assuming a non-IIT or non-NIT school (or an equivalent) you are most likely looking outside of the Top 15 U.S. schools with a 680 GMAT score. However, without more guidance on your focus, I cannot offer more substantive guidance.

@Micheal: I studied at a State level university and not from an IIT or a NIT. The focus for joining the MBA would be to advance in my present career, learn more about other aspects of business. I also wish to set up my own venture in the long run.

@Jon The target schools are 1. INSEAD
2. UCLA Anderson
3. Carnegie Mellon
4. NUS
5. ISB

I would like to know how the gaps in my education will affect admission to the top tier MBA programmes.

Hi,

Though your GMAT is a little weak your profile can compensate for that. Your experience is in a different sector than IT and the role is BD/ sales.

Experience of Eastern Asian and European markets will really help. Extra curriculars are also decent.

According to us you should target:

ISB
CMU Tepper
MIT Sloan ( aspirational but give it a shot)
Purdue
Texas Mccombs

NUS is a good GM program and is very cost effective as well but if you are looking at starting your venture experience of US B school will help because startups get support and funding easily.

Your list will also depend on where you want to start your venture - India or US.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to contact us.

Allright, INSEAD is a wee bit of a Stretch, but you do gotta go for some Stretch schools. Tepper and Anderson are somewhere in the nether zone between Stretch and Competitive, and at both NUS and ISB you should be a bit more competitive. So basically, your list is pretty on the dot, although you are missing your one or two safe schools if your intentions is to cover all your bases, and make sure you do an MBA this year, I would add two more apps.

McCombs is really a good suggestion - great tech program, great employment stats. A school on the up and up. Might also look at BNabson, Georgia Tech. Pleeeenty of wonderful places out there.

Mav,

NUS is a possibility. INSEAD and UCLA Anderson would be real long shots with Carnegie Mellon Tepper as a reach that could be included as one of your reach schools. ISB more heavily weighs GMAT score and therefore would also be a long shot.

The gaps in your education are not as great a concern as the fact that you didn't graduate from a top tier Indian university, have middling grades and a sub-700 GMAT score. Since you can still control your GMAT score, I would recommend you sitting for the exam once again.

What our your goals? This will help in recommending schools for further research.

@MBAPrepAdvantage : Thank you for your advice. I think i will give the GMAT one more shot. My short term goals are to proceed further in my career and to take up the role of a marketing/branding manager. In the long term, i want to start my own automotive electronics firm with a focus on innovative technology. The MBA will help me fill up gaps in my knowledge that will be necessary to attain my goal.

@apphelp team : Thank you for your suggestions.

@Jon : Thank you. I will get in touch with you soon.

Given your goals are in the automotive industry you might wish to research less competitive mid-western U.S. MBA schools to see if the companies you are targeting (Big 3 - GM, Ford, Chrysler) recruit from these schools. Essentially all schools besides Chicago Booth, Northwestern Kellogg, and Michigan Ross (which would be too competitive for your present profile).

Based on the same lines of selection, what do you think are my chances with European business schools such as oxford, HEC and Cranfield ?

We see tough chances at HEC, Said and Cranfield. European schools prefer higher work ex and their avg work ex is atleast 1.5 - 2 years more than the US schools.

3 years will be less for European schools.
