Hi,

I have scored 710 (Q50, V35, AWA 5.5) on GMAT. Now I am looking for some guidance on what should be done next. Retake / move on ?

I am opting for MBA to get better profile and to pursue my passion in core business domain. Frankly, I am targeting top B-schools only. I already have one PG in Mechanical Engineering (M.Tech IIT Bombay, India) with 9.24/10 CGPA. I have 3+ years of experience with one of the Big4 Consulting firm (mainly IT Work). Now I am aspiring for only top B-schools such as Harvard, Stanford, Wharton etc. Hence I was a bit concerned about my current GMAT score.

I am now struggling with two basic questions : Should I retake the exam / is it necessary ? I was initially looking for a score above 770-780.

Personally, I am quite confused. From certain angle, the score appears to be decent (as few people say). However it is not convincing.
Please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks a lot for your help !

Retaking the GMAT is not required but recommended.

Since you are applying from the competitive Indian IT group and since you had been scoring higher on your practice exams, I would suggest you retake the GMAT. The average Indian IT acceptance to your target schools has a higher score than you presently have.

Good luck,

Dear Michael,

I will complete my MBA (HELP University College, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) in January 2012 where I have successfully completed my BBA from the University of Madras in India with the average score of 69.30%(I achieved 100 out of 100 in my Project paper- Marketing). Now, I am planning to continue my further higher study to do PhD in Marketing where GMAT is mandatory to let the ball rolling in a good ground, therefore what will be suggestions about to plan for getting into a good business school and to become a successful applicant to achieve Scholarship or Fund. I am expecting an expert idea and strategic plan to get the thing done.

I will be waiting for your prompt reply to me.

Thankfully,
Rakesh Kumar Ghosh...

Hi Amit

Wharton's MBA class of 2012 the students scored in the range of 650-770 in their GMAT and the median GMAT score being 720. Looking at the 2012 class profile at Harvard the students scored in the range of 550-790 in their GMAT and the median GMAT score was 730. Hence a GMAT score of 700 plus is advisable if you are aiming for top institutes

However GMAT alone won't determine your chances of admission; beyond the academics will also help you in determining your candidature and your work experience plays a vital role as well. In general most of the Indian applicants are from engineering background with a good 4-5 years of work experience. So you would need to differentiate yourself from others . Start thinking what makes you unique and what's that 'hook' that will be key to your application. Make sure you follow the 'show rather than tell' principle so that the admissions committee could really understand your strengths and differentiating factors Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So you need to ensure that in 3 years of work experience you have demonstrated the skills business schools are looking for. This could still put in a strong set of essays for you.

Amit man,
Well if you really want one of the top three, then to improve your chances you might wanna retake. For an Indian candidate with your background a 710 is not strong enough for you to bank on an accept from a top three school. Unless (there's always an unless) you can find something else that's super strong in your profile/background - like you have some amazing volunteer story where you raised 100k$ and managed a team of 70, or if your family has a huge business, or if your father is a senator or stuff like that.

Hi Amit,

We believe that you can go ahead with 710. You have number of strong elements in your profile which top B schools value e.g. IIT Brand name, a great GPA at IIT, Your experience of big 4 consulting firm, around 4 yrs of experience which is apt for them.

Unless you feel that you profile is vanilla i/e/ no extra curriculars and great achievements at workplace there is no need to retake GMAT as you might miss R1 then. Instead start working on essays and target R1.

Hope that helps.

Rakesh,

Given you have graduated from an IIT you can apply with a 710 and be accepted. However, your MBA admissions chances would be higher with a higher GMAT score. So, if you have the time, retake the GMAT. If you score worse apply with the 710 as your highest (no harm). If you increase your score, great, you have then increased your chances.

Good luck,
