MBA Application/GMAT Guide and/or Mentor

by jib294 » Thu Mar 22, 2012 6:10 am
I am just getting started with the idea of business school/GMAT, however, I would love to get more insight in the steps I need to take with regards to extracurricular activities and other desirable qualities that I would need to achieve to get into an excellent business school program. Currently, I am working as a Research Coordinator for a reputable pediatric teaching hospital and my goal is to gain entrance into a dual degree program (MBA/MPH). Some questions I have are in the vein of sticking out amongst other applicants since my business background is minimal at best besides the minor in finance I had during my undergraduate studies. Ideally, I would love to have a mentor/guide throughout this whole process because I believe the more information/guidance available can only help me get to where I want to go.

Thanks for your insight in advance and look forward to hearing from some of you

Good idea dude!
:)

Well first of all, being in the Healthcare industry is already good. There aren't all that many of you, and apparently the need for MBA/MPH people is high. So that's a good start (and don't worry about the lack of business knowledge too much, after all, that's WHY you are going to Business school). Then the next important thing is your GMAt, GPA and work experience (especially leadership). As for volunteering, you just gotta choose something you love, and then stick with and try to take initiative where possible.

That's a start.

Thank you for the response. I am trying to think of a creative side project that I can perform on my own, an analysis/paper of some sort since I believe that not only illustrates passion & creativity but initiative as well. The reason I think this idea works is because leadership opportunities are limited to some extent at work besides taking on a few extra projects and other supplementary tasks. Would you consider volunteering a must? Or is there something else you would recommend?

Thanks for your insight

If you have the time there is no reason for you NOT to volunteer, especially since in healthcare there is so much need of it. Is it a MUST? No. Will it help a lot? Yes.

And of course any side/entrepreneurial project will be good, but moreso than writing an analysis, its leading people and getting results that will impress them. So if you raise 1 million dollars for cancer kids, it beats publishing three books.
