Question.

Bloomingdale's store in Santa Monica, which opened this summer, is about 105,000 square feet on two floors, less than one-eighth the size of the chain's Manhattan flagship store.

A. Santa Monica store, which opened this summer, is about 105,000 square feet on two floors, less than one-eighth the size of the chain's Manhattan flagship store.
B. Santa Monica store, which opened this summer, is about 105,000 square feet on two floors, less than one-eighth the size of the Manhattan flagship store.

OA is A.
Can some one please tell how B is different from A. (chain's is extra in A, i am not able to understand why A is correct.)
Please help.

In question Bloomingadale is mentioned which is not present in any of the 2 options.
Anyway as mentioned in the question, the store's size is < 1/8th the size of chain's Manhattan store.

in B) the Manhattan flagship store can be of any other chain also. (say UCB).

Is option A correct ?

I think Option A would have been correct if it were "Bloomingdale's store in Santa Monica" instead of "Santa Monica store". Because, "Santa Monica store" literally means a store that is of type Santa Monica. It does not make sense.

Please justify.

Not having the underline might make this harder to see, so let's rewrite the 2 choices using the "Bloomingdale's" that goes with each:

A. Bloomingdale's Santa Monica store, which opened this summer, is about 105,000 square feet on two floors, less than one-eighth the size of the chain's Manhattan flagship store.

B. Bloomingdale's Santa Monica store, which opened this summer, is about 105,000 square feet on two floors, less than one-eighth the size of the Manhattan flagship store.

In all of these choices, the sentence is setting up a comparison between the sizes of 2 stores. We can tell because of the "less than" language. So, when looking at comparisons, we need to check parallelism of the pieces we are comparing:

In choice (A) we are comparing "Bloomingdale's Santa Monica store" with "the chain's Manhattan flagship store"

In choice (B) we are comparing "Bloomingdale's Santa Monica store" with "the Manhattan flagship store"

So now we ask, what are we trying to compare - 2 Bloomingdale's stores or a Bloomingdale store with some Manhattan flagship store (of an unknown brand)? Logically we should compare apples to apples, so this means we need to compare 2 Bloomingdale's stores. In order to do that, we have to reiterate by using "the chain's" modifier as in choice (A).
