Couldn´t beat the Gmat

by GmatTakerNo.1 » Wed May 05, 2010 6:38 am
Hey,
yesterday I did the Gmat, and the AWA, and quantitative part was good, but in the verbal part I did every second question wrong which results in a total score of 560. A little bit disappointing, but my problem was concentration in the last part and mainly the speed of reading.
For example, when there was a sentence correction question over four rows with an underlined part of two rows I need minimum 2 minutes to figure out all grammatical aspects in every part of the sentence.
In the end these SC exercises was a time killer for me.

Do you have any strategies to improve english reading generally? I´m not a native speaker.

I would suggest that you read the economist every day for an hour a day. The only thing that will help is to just read as much as you can. Also, you may want to buy a vocabularly builder book, to help you increase your vocab.

For RC basically the passages can be classified in 4-5 categories business/ science/ social science / history.
So in your free time start reading the most boring stuff u can find on these sites
1. Scientific american
2. Wallstreet journal
3. Newyork times
4. mckinsey quaterly

This will improve ur reading speed (must for RC), In GMAT u'll find the most boring passages u can imagine staring at u so this exercise will prepare you for that.

Start reading the idioms given in MGMAT's SC guide daily (wont take more than 10 mins) and refer spidey's notes they are great (do google).

Just keep doing the questions and most imp. of all keep learning from them, i mean read the solutions very carefully and try to find out if u were able to find all the mistakes in the sentence also if u are not satisfied with a solution always search it on google ;-)

Best of luck for ur prep..
Regards,

Abhishek
