What do you think committees look for in the "Why do you want an MBA, what are your plans after graduation, and why our school will help you?" question. For me, there are several ways to approach it (I work at a school I am applying to) given my reasons:

1. It's part of my benefits package and I want to take advantage I won't go with the 100% honest approach, promoise!
2. After the last recession, I couldn't find a job without an MBA, so I am trying to make myself marketable for the future
3. I truly want to expand my education and gain new insights from the perspective of not only my professors, but also my peers

My future plans involve staying where I work, but working at a more strategic level - exploring new ways to reach people through higher education.

I also want to "justify" my low (2.9) GPA from undergrad.

Any thoughts?

Try to focus on some more tangible things that your MBA will give you. Simply making you more marketable is a reason for you, but that is somewhat of a given when you are applying. Try to think about specific skills that and MBA will provide you with and specifically how you will apply them post graduation.

Well, first of all I think you may want to "justify" your GPA elsewhere. Usually the optional essay is the right place for that.

As for the Why MBA question, actually I don't think it's all as vague as it seems at first glance. The KEY to answering this essay is to revolve it around your SPECIFIC goals (NOT "I need to find a job") but the ACTUAL thing you want to do. Once you have this, the things you NEED to reach this specific goal will become much much clearer.
