Profile Evaluation Fall2013

by avada » Sun Oct 07, 2012 11:31 am
I am a 28 year old male. I just took my Gmat and scored a 710(45q.41v)
Education:
Attended a large Southern University
I graduated with a communications degree with a 2.8~GPA
I went back last year while working and have almost completed a second degree in Economics with a 3.9gpa( i have three classes left) In all econ and math courses I got an A
I played sports during college and was an all conference athlete
I made the deans list during the Econ degree and was a scholar athlete one time during the comm degree

Work Experience:
Ive worked as the CFO for a small company since 2009
I worked as a business analyst for a year to broaden my skill set
I also worked as a consultant for a short stint(on my own)

Extras:
Played sports in college
I host 2 charity events every year that I myself designed. I organize them and run them

Target schools:
University of Texas
Texas A&M
Michigan

What are my chances at these schools and can I reach higher? Obviously I am not HBS material but anything higher than what I am shooting for now?
As far as my GPA, I worked to put myself through school and had a plethora of reasons why my gpa wasnt great before. I took care of an ill family member in this time as well.

Thanks for your help

Hi,

Michigan is a good school, but otherwise I think your profile is much better than the schools you are targeting. In case your inclination is operations/SCM you may also aim for Purdue, Kelly, Columbia and UCLA Anderson.

If you can describe your leadership experiences in detail I can help you better.

Thank you for your response Varun.

My leadership experiences would be as follows:
My current company is a family owned business. I answer to only one person. I am directly in charge of the accountant and indirectly in charge of the other employees. This includes our construction workers and bar employees.

At my previous company I started out as an accountant. Very shortly thereafter I was in charge of lower level employees like the receptionist and errand personnel. By the end of my stay I also assisted with the management of the entire accounting office in addition to the lower level employees. SOme of the employees reported directly to me and I kept track of everything from attendance to performance. I frequently made the decision to hire or fire individuals. I worked directly with this companies CFO to make decisions and was frequently put on special projects. He came in shortly before I did and we had to rework the entire company's structure. I was responsible for creating our process from start to finish. I also fixed many of our previous legal troubles.

In my extra activities: I have been a part of several gaming teams. MY current team I am a founding member of. We travel through out the country and I handle most of the logistics of this. I also organize our two charity events each year. I did literally everything to run both events. I found the charity , chose the structure and even handled the advertising.

In sports I have been captain of some of the teams I have been on. I was not captain of the last team as I was injured before the year I would have been. Since I couldnt play I was not a captain.

If you need any more details please let me know.

Leadership skills - Positive and atleast 3 experience to talk about
Team building and people skills - Positive and atleast 2 experience to talk about
Social Work - Decent
Sports Achievements - Good
Entrepreneurial Mind-set - Good

I think you have a lot of good stories to talk about. Just that the best of these need to be plucked out and worked upon so that they have the maximum impact. And then these stories need to be woven into a smooth app story which presents your profile in a coherent way and ties them well to your short and long term goals.

For example one of your essay answers may rate your profile very high on diversity. In such an answer I would want to take one experience from your professional and extra-co life and tie them through a thread that you have worked hard and showed a well-quantified impact in both the spheres.
