MGMAT CAT CR doubt

by samyak » Sat Jun 19, 2010 3:56 am
Doctor: Research shows that adolescents who play video games on a regular basis are three times as likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome as are adolescents who do not play video games. Federal legislation that prohibits the sale of video games to minors would help curb this painful wrist condition among adolescents.

The doctor's conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions?
a. The majority of federal legislators would vote for a bill that prohibits the sale of video games to minors.
b. Not all adolescents who play video games on a regular basis suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome.
c. Playing video games is the only way an adolescent can develop carpal tunnel syndrome.
d. Most parents would refuse to purchase video games for their adolescent children.
e. The regular playing of video games by adolescents does not produce such beneficial effects as better hand-eye coordination and improved reaction time.

OA after few explanations.

I'd say D on this one. The conclusion is in the last sentence: legislation preventing kids from buying video games would reduce their incidence of carpal tunnel from playing video games. But just because they can't buy them doesn't mean they can't play them; what if they get them from some other source? The conclusion depends on the assumption that that won't happen. If it did-- if parents bought games for their kids-- then the legislation wouldn't have the effect that is claimed.
Because the question asks for an assumption on which the conclusion DEPENDS, negating the answer choices is helpful in seeing that only one of them, D, is necessary.

OA is D but there has been some debate over the answer for this question. There are two possible answers here, A and D. The passage uses the word "Bill" and bill doesn't mean that it will become a law. Ron has agreed that there is a problem with the wording of this question.

+1 for D.

I was also on to C earlier but then I eliminated C due to extreme wording "only way". Doctors are no where claiming that playing video game is the only cause of this disease.

Premise uses careful wording "sale of video games to minors"..so legislation is prohibiting MINOR from buying but what about Parents.

What about the bill - Doctor has clearly assumed that the bill will pass.
A can also be right.
Yes i agree that D is also right.

You are right. That is also one possible assumption.
However, I feel that Doctors are only predicting that if the bill passes then what would happen. Doctors know that the bill has not passed yet so their conclusion is valid only if the bill passes. If the bill does not pass then doctors claim has no base to stand on. So, I think A is not proper, it has to be D.

Am I clear ?
