More than thirty

by YellowSapphire » Mon Jul 26, 2010 11:24 pm
More than thirty years ago Dr. Barbara McClintock, the Nobel Prize winner, reported that genes can "jump," as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another.

(A) as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another
(B) like pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another
(C) as pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others
(D) like pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others
(E) as do pearls that move mysteriously from one necklace to some other one

Is it a real phenomena or figurative illustration any why? I confused here for deciding LIKE or AS.

another or other?

IMO C

We are comparing here the process of moving : so 'as' is required.
[ like is used to compare Nouns]

Only A, C, E remains

A : no verb
E : wordy

IMO B.

Here genes and pearl are compared(ie) nouns are compared. So like must be used.

B and D

Note that option D ends in from one to others. This is not proper idiom.

It must be from one to another.

Hence B

OA?

You made same mistake what I did. Do you see a comma after JUMP?
So use of LIKE in B and use of AS in C is OK.

The deciding factor is the meaning and what compared which I have asked in first post.

(A) as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another ( as +S +V)
(B) like pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another ( correct, like +Ving)
(C) as pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others ( wordy)
(D) like pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others ( wordy and like +N/Ving)
(E) as do pearls that move mysteriously from one necklace to some other one ( wordy )

Is it a real phenomena or figurative illustration any why? I confused here for deciding LIKE or AS.

another or other?
