Ratio-Problem Solving Please help

by amomin » Thu Mar 03, 2011 2:27 am
The ratio, by volume, of soap to alcohol to water in a certain solution is 2, 50, 100. The solution will be altered so that the ration of the soap to alcohol is doubled while the ratio of the soap to water is halved. If the altered solution contain 100 cubic centimeter of alcohol, How many cubic centimeters of water will it contain

Let us assume that Volume of soap = 2x, volume of alcohol = 50x, and volume of water = 100x
When the ratio of soap to alcohol is doubled, the ratio = 4x:50x
When the ratio of soap to water is halved, the ratio becomes (1/2)*(2x:100x) = 2x:200x or 4x:400x

So, new volumes of soap, alcohol, and water are 4x, 50x, and 400x respectively.
It is given that altered solution contain 100 cubic centimeter of alcohol, so 50x = 100 or x = 2

Therefore, volume of water = 2*400 = 800 cubic centimeters.
