DS pls explain

by moonlite » Thu Oct 02, 2008 1:05 pm
From May 1 to May 30 in the same year, the balance in a checking account increased.
What was the balance in the checking account on May 30?

(1) If, during this period of time, the increase in the balance in the checking
account had been 12 percent, then the balance in the account on May 30 would
have been $504
(2) During this period of time, the increase in the balance in the checking account
was 8 percent.

OA is A

The question is asking for an amount so don't we need both the statements? Pls explain. Thanks.

OA is A
Statement (1)

let the initial balance be x

12% increase = 1.12x
1.12x = 504

You can solve for x.

but the question is "the balance in a checking account increased.
What was the balance in the checking account on May 30"

now we can only find the initial amount not the "increase"

Statement (2) this one is clearly insufficient.

Combining (1) & (2) we get the answer.

I think the answer should be C not A.

Anybody knows what am I missing ?

I also vote for C
The first statement gives principal and the second statement gives us rate, so we need both to find out the end balance.

The problem is correctly worded. The problem lies with those who read the question.

(1) states a past counter factual. The question is about past-factual.
