A recent poll indicates that many people in the United States hold a combination of conservative and liberal political views; i.e., they denounce the big government, saying government is doing too much and has become too powerful, while at the same time supporting many specific government programs for health care, education, and the environment.

A) they denounce the big government, saying government is doing too much and has become too powerful, while at the same time supporting

B) they denounce big government- they say that government is doing too much and has become too powerful-but supporting at the same time

C) they denounce big government, say that government is doing too much and it has become too powerful, while they support at the same time

D) while they denounce big government, saying that government is doing too much and has become too powerful, at the same time supporting

E) while they are denouncing big government- they say that government is doing too much and it has become too powerful-supporting at the same time

should C say:

C) they denounce big government, sayING that government is doing too much and it has become too powerful, while they support at the same time

?

if so I would have chosen this one

gmatnmein2010, are u sure you didnt make a typo with the OA??

Option C is blatantly wrong.

A) they denounce the big government, saying government is doing too much and has become too powerful, while at the same time supporting [clear and concise. Correct according to me]

B) they denounce big government- they say that government is doing too much and has become too powerful-but supporting at the same time [multiple mistakes. run on error and lack of independent sentence after 'but' Eliminated!]

C) they denounce big government, say that government is doing too much and it has become too powerful, while they support at the same time [run on error. Eliminated!]

D) while they denounce big government, saying that government is doing too much and has become too powerful, at the same time supporting [wrong placement of 'while'. 'while' needs to be placed where a contrast is required. Eliminated]

E) while they are denouncing big government- they say that government is doing too much and it has become too powerful-supporting at the same time [same as D]

A) they denounce the big government, saying government is doing too much and has become too powerful, while at the same time supporting - Correct

B) they denounce big government- they say that government is doing too much and has become too powerful-but supporting at the same time "they denounce... but supporting." - Parallelism Error

C) they denounce big government, say that government is doing too much and it has become too powerful, while they support at the same time - 'it' is not required

D) while they denounce big government, saying that government is doing too much and has become too powerful, at the same time supporting - Begins with a subordinate clause "while they denounce..." but there is no main clause.

E) while they are denouncing big government- they say that government is doing too much and it has become too powerful-supporting at the same time - Fragmented - Begins with a subordinate clause " while they are denouncing..." but there is no main clause.

IMO : A ; however, I think supporting should be support to make it ||el to denounce.

they denounce....., while....they support...
I am on a break !!

I picked C because of parallelism.

However the lack of ...
1) "and" before "say"
2) redundant "it"
... made A very tempting.

A) they denounce the big government, saying government is doing too much and (the government) has become too powerful, while (they) at the same time supporting

C) they denounce big government, say that government is doing too much and it has become too powerful, while they support at the same time

Btw, first post. Hope that I'm colouring "according to standards." :)

B is wrong coz its not parallel "they denounce... but supporting."

C is wrong because it's a run-on & is redundant. also the "it" is not necessary, as pointed out by fibonacci

D & E are coz they are fragments, no main verb.

--> A
