33. A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, is cultivated in China as part of a program to integrate traditional herbal medicine into a contemporary system of health care.

(A) A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
(B) A derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, of the Madagascar periwinkle,
(C) A Madagascar periwinkle derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
(D) The Madagascar periwinkle has a derivative which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, that
(E) The Madagascar periwinkle, a derivative of which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,

Am caught up btwn C and E. Both seem to be proper just that the reference antecedent changes.
Pls advice on which is right.[/u]

Between C and E I think C is better since E changes the meaning...

C says derivative is cultivated.

E says Ma dagascar periwinkle is cultivated.

Mohit pointed out the right thing ...but answer got to be E because ... medicine not its derivative can be cultivated as part of the program...

(A) A substance derived from the Madagascar periwinkle, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
(B) A derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, of the Madagascar periwinkle,
derivative is too far from its subject
(C) A Madagascar periwinkle derivative, which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
I don't see anything wrong with this, but I prefer "substance derived" to "derivative"
(D) The Madagascar periwinkle has a derivative which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients, that
comma before "that" doesn't look right. if comma were not present, I would say that this option is correct as well (but I would still go with A)
(E) The Madagascar periwinkle, a derivative of which has proved useful in decreasing mortality among young leukemia patients,
this says that the periwinkle itself is being cultivated

My answer:A.

I got "A" although that may not be the OA.

If the OA is "E", it still sounds awkward [to me]...

"The Madagascar periwinkle, a derivative of which..."

What exactly is the derivative, is it the periwinkle, or is it the Madagascar periwinkle? If the Madagascar periwinkle is the derivative, then it's a derivative of what?

E says Ma dagascar periwinkle is cultivated.
Well put!! I initially marked C . After reading this I am now convinced that it is E.

A plant (Madagascar periwinkle) is cultivated, a derivative of which is...

only E correctly captures the meaning of the sentence.

All other answer choices say that the substance derived from the plant is cultivated in China. Meaning is wrong in all of them.

Wow, this was a tricky one!!

Wine is a derivative of grapes. So you cultivate the grapes in order to make wine. You can't "cultivate" the wine itself.
