Safe Flight

by anshulseth » Thu May 07, 2009 4:03 am
The National Transportation Safety Board has recommended the use of fail-safe mechanisms on airliner cargo door latches assuring the doors are properly closed before takeoff and to prevent them from popping open in flight.
(A) assuring the doors are properly closed
(B) for the assurance of proper closing
(C) assuring proper closure
(D) to assure closing the doors properly
(E) to assure that the doors are properly closed
OA: E. I went for D. Can someone explain the error, and why E over D.
"Recommended .... to assure that" seems to be the correct usage.

E brings out the original intended meaning of the sentence much better than
D
D sounds a little awkward (recommended to assure closing) than E since its missing "that"

i think
E
is following the rule [of placing the modifier properly nearer to noun closely ] correctly
which
D
is violating
OG says that

"D - incorrect - offers the necessary infinitive, but the gerund phrase closing ... imprecisely refers to the act of closing the doors rather than to the condition of the closed doors."

I am also confused in the above explanation...can someone please explain it in more detail....
