Advancement in technology

by bhumika.k.shah » Sun Jan 31, 2010 6:55 am
Advancement in technology occurs primarily in areas in which customers have expressed an interest. Only certain businesses are currently demanding advancements in telecommunications technology. Accordingly, future advances in telecommunications technology will yield products useful almost exclusively to those certain businesses.

Which of the following is an assumption made in the argument above?

A.The demand for standard telecommunications technology is affected by increased demand for advancements in such technology.

B.Advancements in technology are mainly brought about by desire from a particular group of customers.

C.Improved telecommunications technology will not be generally applicable to the needs of all customers.

D.The number of advancements made in telecommunications technology increases when different kinds of businesses demand it.

E.Most customers do not keep up with new developments in telecommunications technology.

I am really bad at CR ! :-(
if someone could help me how to go about eliminating answer options until i find the correct one!!!!

Please discuss in depth!

well i am no expert but after scratching my head for a whole period of approxmately 7-8 mnths , i have digged this

first be familiar with type of CR's
broadly these are
assumptions
must be true
weakening
flaw in reasoning
evaluation
strengthening
bold face
method of reasoning
resolve the paradox

each of the above has sme technique...for detail refer Power score..which will help to do POE

most of them has common thing...premises/evidence and conclusion
identify them
in assumption there will always be a gap in premises and conclusion that gap is our ans
now let us apply it here
evidence:Advancement in technology occurs primarily in areas in which customers have expressed an interest.
Only certain businesses are currently demanding advancements in telecommunications technology.

conclusion: future advances in telecommunications technology will yield products useful almost exclusively to those certain businesses.

the word exclusively indicates it will benefit only few customers those who have expressed int
well this is pretty straight...this is hidden and is therfore the assumption
scanning choices C(sorry edited) is similar to our choice
hence C

thephoenix has shown good work of patience in writing such details.

I arrived to the answer almost in the same fashion. According to the passage,
Customer drives --> Business --> leads to Advancement in technology.

Towards the end, we see an opinion - 'advances in telecommunications technology will yield products useful almost exclusively to those certain businesses'. What does it mean ?

It simply means the advancements are not useful for general public --> needs of all customers

Hence, C

hope it helps.

This a typical kind of CR where we can apply Kaplan Denial Test.Try to negate C.

C.Improved telecommunications technology will not be generally applicable to the needs of all customers.

Negate C:

Improved telecommunications technology will not be generally applicable to the needs of all customers.

Improved telecommunications technology will be generally applicable to the needs of all customers. ...Then the whole argument falls apart..

We could use Kaplan Denial Test in cases where Causal -Reasoning takes place.

Premise 1: Advancement in tech. occurs in areas in which customers expressed interest
Premise 2: Currently advancements is telecom tech. is demanded by only certain business
Conclusion : Future advancements in telecom tech. will b useful almost exclusively to those businesses.

Since the conclusion is based on premise 2 we'll focus on these two pieces.

A.The demand for standard telecommunications technology is affected by increased demand for advancements in such technology.
Incorrect : Effects of tech. advancements on demand for standard telecom tech. is irrelevant.

B.Advancements in technology are mainly brought about by desire from a particular group of customers.
Incorrect : Premise states that advancement in tech. occurs in areas in which customers express interest but there is no indication that advancements happen due to 'desires' of particular customers.

C.Improved telecommunications technology will not be generally applicable to the needs of all customers.
Correct : If we negate this answer choice (improved telecom tech will be generally applicable to the needs of ALL customers) it seriously hurts the argument.

D.The number of advancements made in telecommunications technology increases when different kinds of businesses demand it.
Incorrect : Number or increase/decrease in telecom tech advancements is clearly out of scope

E.Most customers do not keep up with new developments in telecommunications technology.
Incorrect : Irrelevant

Hey Ramprakaashk,

First off thanks for ur kind words. As for asking this question in this thread, well this is ur first post and its definitely all right to reach out to ppl here on BTG.

Verbal section specially CRs is kind of a passion for me. I absolutely love breaking down the arguments and coming at the right answer choice. So i never thought about how much time I should spend or for that matter anyone should spend on Verbal. I personally would keep doing verbal for hours on end without getting tired. Its a matter of choice u see.

One thing i would suggest is get a copy of Powerscore CR Bible n Manhattan SC. I can easily say these two books have made me a 'verbal section addict' of sorts : )
