specific detail & Inference

I notice that a problem I consistently run into is that I am losing points to inference and Specific Detail. I know that one must always have a supporting text to back up or defend the inference answer. THis has helped alot but I am am wondering if there are any golden rules to adhere to for specific detail and inference?
