MIning companies

by heshamelaziry » Fri Sep 11, 2009 3:41 pm
The removal of hillsides and mountaintops, necessary for mining companies to extract coal quickly from deeply-buried seams, destroys forests. Experts therefore recommend that coal be extracted using time-consuming deep bore techniques.

Because public opinion opposes coal mining, some states now allow mining companies to extract coal from any particular site for only a short period of time.

The statements above, if true, best support which of the following conclusions?

1)Mining companies will continue to be able to extract coal using deep bore techniques but not by removing hillsides or mountaintops.

2)The only way to preserve forests on hillsides and mountaintops is to stop coal mining.

3)New mining techniques will be developed to make it possible to extract coal quickly without removing hillsides or mountaintops.

4)Public opinion regarding coal mining works against forest preservation efforts.

5)Allowing mining companies to extract coal from any particular site for only a short period of time is unlikely to be a successful response to public opinion.

I was stuck between B and D. However, I chose D because I'm generally suspicious about options that contain strong wording such as "only".

by enniguy » Wed Sep 16, 2009 5:30 pm
Can somebody explain hows it D? Certainly public opinion is not be blamed which is crystal clear: Stop coal mining. I thought it was E since that summarizes the situation better!

problem of minning owners is that they need to deforest for minning quickly.esperts are providin alternative to this , but is time consuming.

bcoz of public opinion opposing minning, states does not want the minning owners for the technology. hence they are forced to mine in their old ways.

hence its actually public opinion oposing the coal minning forcing the mine owners to deforest.

hence D is right
by POE
A)which method they will chose is not discussed
B)its an extreme case not supported by the passage
c)not discussed in the passage
e)we dont know whether new technique will cause deforestation or not
It does not matter how many times you get knocked down , but how many times you get up

The public opinion doesn't want mining to happen. Then, how can miners be allowed to mine in old way...

I didn't quite understand :( .

I got D as

Expert's opinion : if miners adopt (time-consuming) deep bore techniques, it would save forest.

Public opinion : public opinion opposes coal mining, so miners could extract coal for short period of time, which could affect forest.

conclusion : public opinion is against the forest, as it is forcing miners to do the work quickly.
Thanks,
VJ
