Perplexed...Need Help !!!

by vivek008 » Mon Jul 15, 2013 12:38 am
Hi BTG

I have been following the BTG 60 day course for almost around 2 months, and due to a lot of constraints im lagging behind by 20 days roughly.
I have a couple of questions to ask . Firstly, im weak in verbal. i completed test 1 of GmatPrep (i am in Day 26 and have taken it twice till now) and scored 21 and 23 and im not sure to what extent i can improve my verbal score. i parallely want to make my foundation strong too, so can you please help me with what magazines or what news colums i should/can read to improve my english. And also, i am planning to give my GMAT on/around September 2nd 2013 to get into the FALL batch for 2014. Could you please tell me how good my chances are to get into Fall batch. I am aiming for a score above 720 so that i can get into some good B-school which ranks below 40 globally. Im worried about the application deadlines of the colleges. Finally,is september 2013 a good time for writing the exam to get into 2014 FALL batch? Please advice.
Thanks in Advance.

Hi vivek008,

You've described a detailed scenario; let's break it into pieces so that you can make the best decisions possible:

1) You want to score 720+ on the GMAT. Currently, your Verbal Scaled Score is way too low. Even with an exceptional Quant Score, you'd need to score well into the high 30s or 40s in Verbal to score 720+.

2) You want to apply for the first round in 2013 (which varies from school to school but typically occurs in late September or early October). This means that you'll need to have your applications complete (GMAT, essays, letters of rec, etc.) within the next 2.5 months.

3) If you repeat the GMAT, you'll have to wait 31 days between exams, so scheduling your test will be an important part of all this.

Here are the things to consider:

A) Do you really need a 720+ or do you just "think" that you need it?
B) Do you have to apply for first round or could you apply second round?
C) Do you have enough time to study to pull up your Verbal and Overall Score?

Your entire plan seems to hinge on the GMAT, so you have to focus on that first. If you can't pull up your Verbal Scaled Score, then the other parts of the plan don't really matter. So, what can you do to make time to study? I've never used the BTG 60 Day Course so I can't offer any advice on that point, but it sounds as though you're way behind. You can either make more time for that program or you can change programs. Since the GMAT is a standardized test, there's a real easy way to tell if a program works for you: Has your score gone up? (and has it gone up enough to your liking?). Think your way through these details and make the necessary adjustments.
