European, 27yrs old, English is my third language.
Prepared for < two months.
At the beginning my Quant skills were very rusty and I scored only 660 points on the GMATPrep. I started frequenting this forum, and following the advice from GMATGuryNY. I tried to understand his approach to problems and it payed off. Last week I scored 750 on the second GMATPrep test.
On the other hand, I had excellent results with the CR and RC. I had a total of 4 mistakes for all RC questions in the OG, and less than 10 for the CR.
However, at SC, I was mediocre at best. Even though I command an excellent english vocabulary, I have rarely had the opportunity to speak or write in english. Then I started to frequent the SC forum and read the wonderful explanations of all the experts on this site. And my stats improved significantly. Nevertheless, the SC corrections I had on the test were daunting - full of weird idiomatic constructions and perplexing order of tenses questions that were way harder than 90% of the material in the OG.
And now the advice:
1.If you're having trouble with RC you probably need to improve your vocabulary.
The harder RC questions exact an excellent vocabulary, and if your vocabulary is wanting you will not be able to discern the nuances of meaning that the correct comprehension depends on, and thus, the correct answer will remain unavowed and out of your reach.
2.Idiomatic constructions are still tested.
3.If you see 2 equations with 3 unknowns, or 1 equation with 2 unknowns try to prove that you cannot find the solution. Do not assume that you can't.
4.Second GMATPrep test I took predicted my exact result: 750. I've done one PS, one DS, one CR and 5 SC questions wrong.
And now a question for you. I want to pursue an MBA or MS in Accountancy, I have 4 years of work experience and an excellent GPA from an east-european university. My AWA score will hopefully be 5, but certainly not a 6.
Is my score enough for top universities in the NY area? More importantly, the university does not have to be a top one, but can I count on some financial assistance. Any tips?
