When dramatic news headlines cause children to become anxious, psychologists advise parents to discuss the disturbing event with them, putting the news coverage into perspective, avoid overreacting, and to turn to a counselor or clergy member if a child shows signs of long-lasting distress.

OA: B

As someone has already noticed, you forgot the answer choices. These are my thoughts for the moment though:

Notice how you've got "advise parents to discuss...". That's your main clue right there: the verbs that follow are all part of an enumeration and thus should also be "to put", "to avoid" or something of the sort. That "putting" is incorrect because it does not sustain the parallelism.

the options are :

A . ....
B. putting the news coverage into perspective, to avoid
C. putting the news coverage into perspective, avoiding
D. put the news coverage into perspective, avoiding
E. put the news coverage into perspective, to avoid

so why is the correct choice B and not E?
