In a recent election, Geoff received 0.5 percent of the 6,000 votes cast. To win the election, a candidate needed to receive more than x% of the vote. If Geoff needed exactly 3,571 more votes to win the election, what is the value of x ?

(A) 50
(B) 54
(C) 56
(D) 60
(E) 63

Number of votes received by Geoff = .05(6000) = 30.
Since 3571 additional votes are required for Geoff to win, the total number of votes required to win = 3571+30 = 3601.
We can plug in the answer choices, which represent the percentage of votes that must be EXCEEDED in order to win.
Answer choice A (50%) implies that a candidate must win more than .5(6000) = 3000 votes.
Answer choice D (60%) implies that a candidate must win more than .6(6000) = 3600 votes.
Since Geoff must receive 3601 votes to win -- the least integer greater than 3600 -- the correct answer is D.

Geoff already received 0.5% vote and he needed 3,571 more votes to win.

Now, 3571 is (3571/6000)*100 ≈ 357/6 = 59.5% of 6000
So, Geoff needed to receive just more than (59.5 + 0.5)% = 60% of the vote.
--> x = 60

The correct answer is D.
