Please help in Application process

by rockthemba » Fri Sep 28, 2012 5:49 am
Hi,

I recently gave my GMAT and scored 670. I am a graduate major in Engineering from one of the top universities in India (In the likes of IITs, BITS). Though I got good IT jobs, I choose to do agriculture after my graduation as I had passion for it (Family Profession). I am a banana farmer, producing banana over 10 acres for the past 4 years.

My goals are:
To do Agriculture in corporate level(contract farming).
Market the agricultural produce, direct from farmer to consumer (Eliminate middlemen - Generally there are 4-5 middlemen).
Establish food processing Industry.

GMAT Score: 670 GPA: 2.2
In order to pursue my goals I need an MBA such that I could take care of the financials, handle the work force, learn business strategies etc.
I would like to apply for top B schools. Please help me in effectively phrasing my objectives in the B school point of view. How to handle the essays and interviews.

Thanks

Hi,

Your problem is open ended but I will try to offer some tips for you to organize your essays. Try to start thinking on following points:

1) What are your long term goals: Right now I see 2-3 goals mentioned. Contract farming, marketing your produce and establish food processing industry.

2) Consequently what are your short term goals: Where do you see yourself in next 3-4 years so that you can fulfill your long term goals. For example if you wish to establish a processing facility in long term, in short term you may wish to do some business development and create partners in food processing industry. And later on you can apply these skills when you open your own food processing industry etc. Here you should also talk about how will an MBA help you in realizing these short-term goals.

3) Leadership achievements: Your entrepreneurship experience in itself is a testimony to your leadership skills but this should be brought out very well in your essays. Talk about various leadership situations such as times when you motivated people under you, how did you manage crises etc.

4) Addition to the existing class: How will you add to the diversity and learning of your peer group at B-school. This would be quiet evident as you have a diverse background, but this should come out with maximum impact.

Your profile is good and your app story makes a good Entrepreneurship MBA case. Brilliant essays will definitely help you secure interview calls from top schools.
