Sunspots, vortices of gas associated with strong electromagnetic activity, are visible as dark spots on the surface of the Sun but, have never been sighted on the Sun's poles or equator.
(A) are visible as dark spots on the surface of the
Sun but have never been sighted on
(B) are visible as dark spots that never have been
sighted on the surface of the Sun
(0 appear on the surface of the Sun as dark spots
although never sighted at
(D) appear as dark spots on the surface of the Sun,
although never having been sighted at
(E) appear as dark spots on the Sun's surface,
which have never been sighted on

in option E, instead of appear if we use appearing, will that make option E the correct choice?
I'm no expert, just trying to work on my skills. If I've made any mistakes please bear with me.

Appearing would make the sentence incorrect.
try reading the same sentence (E) with appearing:

Sunspots, vortices of gas associated with strong electromagnetic activity, appearing as dark spots on the Sun's surface, which have never been sighted on the Sun's poles or equator .

IMO with appearing , we dont need the WHICH. the sentence can better be written as:
Sunspots, vortices of gas associated with strong electromagnetic activity, appearing as dark spots on the Sun's surface, have never been sighted on the Sun's poles or equator .

The main issue with this is that it is not a complete sentence at all, since it has no "main verb".
the sentence can better be written as:
Sunspots, vortices of gas associated with strong electromagnetic activity, appearing as dark spots on the Sun's surface, have never been sighted on the Sun's poles or equator .
Well, GMAT does not seem to prefer this construction, since it is not very clear what the participial phrase (in this case "appearing") is modifying. A similar example (not exactly same though) is #106, OG-12, where following is incorrect:

Beatrix Potter, in her book illustrations, carefully coordinating them with her narratives, capitalized on her keen observation and love of the natural world.
