Stagnant Verbal Score

by krishamathur » Mon Jul 02, 2012 7:57 pm
Hi,
I started prepping for my GMAT about 3 months ago and my initial GMAT Test Prep score was 600 (32,24). Since then I have been able to raise my Math score to 48, but my verbal score has not improved much. Even after completing the OG, Verbal OG and Kaplan, it has inched up to 34 in my last mock. The main problem seems to be SC and CR. I am 2 weeks away from my GMAT Date and stuck at a 670. Please Advice!!

The OG's are great as sources of problems, but if you're struggling with the underlying logic, I'd highly recommend picking up some well-regarded books dealing specifically with critical reasoning and sentence correction. They will give you a more thorough understanding.

Thanks for the tip Bill! Is there any such material available online?

The Veritas Prep books are available on Amazon and in iBooks, and I believe other companies have materials available online as well.

Hi,

I did have a similar problem with Verbal. Things were not going anywhere. I did read a lot of fiction. If you have time, try reading some good novels and focus on improving comprehension. Also, you should try reading HBS Magazine articles (online) and Chicago University Magazine. Both of these are online sources. Read articles and then try to come up with a main idea of each article after reading it. Goal should be able to get a big picture after reading the passage in timed limit in the first pass and then dive into questions.

Bottom line, reading fiction really helps with improving comprehension and raising Verbal score.

While I do agree that reading does help in RC, I do not agree that reading fiction helps. Most passages appearing are related to business, science and philosophy. As such reading non fiction like HBS journal sounds a better idea.
